Editorial Note:

A political storm is brewing inside the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (CRM/MRC), as an internal power struggle threatens to divide the party.

The party’s Vice President, now serving as Interim President, Mamadou Yakubu Mota, is reportedly delaying the return of Maurice Kamto as National President.

Mota took over leadership when Kamto briefly crossed over to MANIDEM to pursue his presidential candidacy. Since then, Mota has moved to consolidate power, including the appointment of his own special advisers.

At the heart of the dispute is Mota’s push for the CRM to declare support for one of the northern candidates — Belo Bouba Maigari or Issa Tchiroma Bakary. Kamto, however, has shown no willingness to endorse such an alliance.

On Tuesday, the Alliance for Political Change platform issued a statement clarifying that Kamto is not associated with any coalition talks and has no involvement with the grand rally scheduled for September 13.

For Mota, this is the moment to seize authority and take bold political steps that Kamto had previously blocked. Yet, the key question remains: will CRM loyalists follow Mota’s directives, or remain firmly aligned with Kamto?

In a tense meeting on September 6, it was agreed that Kamto should eventually be reinstated — but no timeline was given, leaving the party’s future direction hanging in the balance.
