In a formal diplomatic ceremony marked by state pageantry and profound reflections on a 46-year journey abroad, prominent Cameroonian diaspora leader, engineer, and political organizer Section Vice President Sango Sammy Ngalame was officially decorated with the prestigious Presidential Medal of Recognition on Wednesday evening.

The high-level event, hosted at the Embassy of the Republic of Cameroon in Washington, D.C., brought together distinguished members of the diplomatic corps, senior government representatives, and prominent leaders of the Cameroonian diaspora community in the United States.

The medal, awarded by presidential decree on behalf of His Excellency President Paul Biya, officially elevates Mr. Ngalame to the rank of Chevalier (Knight) of the National Order of Merit. The distinction recognizes his decades of community development, professional excellence in engineering, and his foundational role within the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM-USA).

Intellectual and Youth Leadership in Attendance

Among the notable dignitaries and guests of honor in attendance was Dr. Julius Babila Taka, President and National Coordinator of the Patriotic Youth of Cameroon and the Diaspora. Dr. Taka’s presence underscored the enduring connection between the foundational accomplishments of veteran diaspora leaders such as Section Vice President Sango Sammy Ngalame and the rising generation of civic-minded Cameroonian youth across the globe.

Also in attendance was Madame Yah Patience Tamfu, President of the CPDM-USA Section, accompanied by the entire Section Executive Bureau from the DMV area, whose presence reflected the organization’s solidarity, institutional cohesion, and support for one of its most distinguished leaders.

The convergence of youth leadership, veteran service, and party leadership added a profound layer of institutional significance to the evening, highlighting a shared cross-generational commitment to the advancement of Cameroonians both at home and abroad.

A Pillar of Diaspora Unity

The official decoration ceremony was presided over by His Excellency Henri Etoundi Essomba, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Cameroon to the United States. Standing before a prominent portrait of President Paul Biya and flanked by the flags of Cameroon and the United States, Ambassador Essomba pinned the medal to Mr. Ngalame’s lapel amid sustained applause from the audience.

In his acceptance address, Section Vice President Sango Sammy Ngalame praised the Ambassador’s stewardship, noting that under his leadership the Embassy of Cameroon in Washington, D.C., has remained “a strong pillar of unity, patriotism, and national representation” for Cameroonians living abroad.

Mr. Ngalame, who arrived in the United States as a young student on September 21, 1980, delivered a poignant speech tracing the arc of his life from newly arrived immigrant to respected elder statesman of the Cameroonian diaspora.

“Over the years, I came to understand that success is not measured only by personal achievement, but also by service to others, commitment to community, and devotion to one’s country,” Section Vice President Sango Sammy Ngalame told the audience. “Whether serving as a student leader, helping build community institutions, promoting unity among Cameroonians abroad, or contributing professionally in engineering and construction, my purpose has always remained the same: to contribute positively.”

Rising Above Division

A central theme of the evening was national cohesion. Mr. Ngalame emphasized the importance of unity as the foundation of Cameroonian identity and called on members of the diaspora to rise above social and political divisions.

“Our strength as Cameroonians has always depended on our ability to rise above division and work together in mutual respect, dignity, and patriotism,” Mr. Ngalame said. “In moments of political disagreement, cultural difference, or social challenge, we must never forget that we share one history, one people, and one future. Cameroon is greater than any individual, any region, any political tendency, or any temporary challenge.”

Section Vice President Sango Sammy Ngalame extended heartfelt institutional gratitude to the active CPDM-USA Section Executive Bureau, particularly acknowledging the leadership of Madame Yah Patience Tamfu, Section President of CPDM-USA, for her commitment to organizational stability, unity, and continuity.

He also paid special tribute to Pioneer Section President Sesesko Joseph Mbu, whose visionary leadership and foundational work decades earlier established the organizational footprint of CPDM-USA in North America.

A Message to the Next Generation

Addressing the younger generation of African immigrants, students, and professionals in attendance—a demographic strongly championed by leaders such as Dr. Julius Babila Taka—Mr. Ngalame emphasized that meaningful leadership is rooted not in titles but in sacrifice and service.

“Never underestimate the power of discipline, education, integrity, and perseverance,” he advised. “Leadership is not about titles; it is about sacrifice, responsibility, and service.”

Surrounded by family members, friends, and lifelong colleagues—many dressed in elegant traditional attire while media crews documented the event live—Section Vice President Sango Sammy Ngalame concluded his remarks by emphasizing that the presidential decoration represented not an end, but a renewed beginning.

“This medal is not the conclusion of service,” Mr. Ngalame declared to a standing ovation. “Rather, it is a renewed call to continue serving with even greater dedication, wisdom, and humility.”

The evening concluded with congratulatory exchanges, commemorative photographs, and renewed expressions of commitment to strengthening unity, civic engagement, and constructive nation-building within the Cameroonian diaspora.
